Polished Floor Disaster. Rough with bubbles what is this?
We wanted to re-polish our floorboards so we lightly sanded the floors and put a coat of floor polish with a roller and they turned up beautiful. But the second coat, after we lightly sanded again and put the second coat of floor polish, it has a lot of rough spots and what appears to be bubbles underneath. The stairs and rails are also rough to touch. Tried to sand the floors again (with a 1/3 sheet hand held sander) and it just keeps peeling. It was 19 hours between coats. Please tell me what has happened to my beautiful floors. Thanks
Yeah, you really messed it up. I did the same exact thing, with the same disastrous results. You must remove the coats of product that you put down. With a scrubbing brush, scrub with 'denatured alcohol'. Scrub and wipe dry as soon as possible. Two people process is best method. Do this in a well ventilated area. After drying well, let stand for a few hours. Next day is really good. lightly sand again, using fine sandpaper. Don't need a machine. By hand is ok. Let sanding dust settle. Vacuum. Now apply the new finish with A LAMBS WOOL APPLICATOR. You can buy this applicator in any wood working shop. about $8.00. Use the applicator by hand. Always moving the finish in one direction. NOT BACK AND FORTH OR UP AND DOWN. One way. If it's an oil based finish, one coat will suffice. If it's a water based or urethane product, you'll probably need two coats. Let first coat dry thoroughly. Lightly, Very lightly, sand with extra fine sand paper. Very lightly. Apply second coat. Your floor will be beautiful. But plenty of hard work. Good Luck.
