What is the hardness adjustable for Staedtler mechanical pencils?

Staedtler pencils have a small ring and called the degree Hardness adjustable. How you use it and what for?

Use the disk rotates slightly towards the back of a pencil, turn it way to shake this way you will have less to give when you use it.
