Thread Wood

how long does it take for java moss to grow?

I just bought some java moss today for my aquarium. I tied it down on a large piece of drift wood with black thread. I was wondering how long will it take for the moss to attach itself onto the driftwood so that i may remove the thread, and how is the growing rate for this type of moss?

The growth rate really depends on the lighting of the tank, fertilizer and nutrients.
If it's a well lit tank, 3 watts per gallon or more, and fertilized with either liquid or special substrate, it can grow pretty quickly.
For example, I have some in my 6 gallon tank with about 3 watts per gallon and I dose weekly with liquid fertilizer. I have to trim it back every 3-4 weeks to prevent it from overwhelming the tank.
Though it is usually recommended for low light tanks; low wattage and no fertilizer will slow it's growth.
If it's a well lit tank, you may be able to remove it in a couple of weeks. However if it's a low lit tank, I'd probably wait at least until the end of the month; though the moss will grow to completely cover the thread and hide it from view, you may just want to leave it as is.
Best of Luck!
